I saw an ad relating to finding an insurance company to cover my vehicle. I responded and received a call immediately from a company that I showed interest in. The call turned out to be very helpful. The entire experience took less than 20 minutes. I am therefore impressed by what Hippo is doing as an online service.

Personal Loans in South Africa

Before you apply for a Personal Loan, here's what you need to know about how they work:

What is a Personal Loan?

What is a Personal Loan?

A Personal Loan is an unsecured loan, meaning no assets are required to access funds. Once approved, money is paid directly into your bank account - usually within 24 hours.

Why compare before you apply?

Why compare before you apply?

Interest rates, fees and repayment terms vary significantly between lenders. Comparing Personal Loans online gives you a clearer picture of the total cost across lenders before you commit.

Comparing is straightforward

Comparing is straightforward

Enter your ID number and we'll retrieve your details and match you with offers from registered credit providers. No branch visits, no upfront paperwork and no impact on your credit score just for comparing.

Completing your application

Completing your application

To apply for the loan, you'll need a valid South African ID, proof of residence and three months' bank statements or payslips. You don't need any documents to compare, so explore your options first and gather documents once you've chosen a loan.

Fees to consider when applying for a loan

The total cost of a loan is made up of more than just the interest rate.

Comparison cards graphicInitiation fee

Initiation fee

A once-off fee charged by credit providers to set up your loan agreement. It is regulated by the National Credit Act and can either be paid upfront or added to your total loan amount, slightly increasing your monthly repayments.

Comparison cards graphicInterest rate

Interest rate

The cost of borrowing money, expressed as an annual percentage rate. In South Africa, Personal Loan interest rates are capped at 21% above the repo rate, compounded monthly, and are determined by your individual credit risk profile.

Service fees

A once-off fee charged by credit providers to set up your loan agreement. It is regulated by the National Credit Act and can either be paid upfront or added to your total loan amount, slightly increasing your monthly repayments.

Comparison cards graphicAdditional costs

Additional costs

Extra expenses not included in the base interest rate or service fee. A primary example is credit life protection, an insurance policy that secures your loan by settling the outstanding balance if you face death, disability, or retrenchment.

Differences between these loan types

Personal, Revolving and Debt Consolidation are three different products. Knowing which one suits your situation can save you money.

Personal Loan

A Personal Loan is a once-off, lump-sum amount you borrow and repay in fixed monthly instalments, usually with a fixed interest rate. Once it's repaid, the loan is closed.

Revolving Loan

A revolving loan gives you ongoing access to a set credit limit. You can borrow, repay and borrow again without needing to apply for a new loan each time.

Debt Consolidation Loan

A Debt Consolidation Loan combines multiple existing debts into one. Instead of managing several repayments to different lenders, you make a single monthly payment. Ideally at a lower interest rate.

score?

What is a credit score?

Your credit score is the number that authorised financial services providers use to assess your loan application. It reflects your history of repaying debt and plays a major role in determining your interest rate, loan repayment terms and approval.

Comparison cards graphicHow to start paying off your debt

How to start paying off your debt

Managing debt is easier when you have a clear plan. If you can't meet your monthly repayment consistently, debt doesn't have to take over your finances. For those who are struggling, options like Debt Counselling or a Debt Consolidation Loan can help.

Comparison cards graphicAre you over
indebted?

Are you over indebted?

According to the FinScope Consumer Survey, an estimated 12 million adults in South Africa are over-indebted. If your monthly debt repayments are too high, this guide covers what over-indebtedness means and what your options are.

Comparison cards graphicShort-term
Loans

Short-term Loans

Short-term loans are built for flexibility. With loan repayment terms ranging from a few weeks to 12 months, they're ideal for bridging cash flow gaps. Just note that interest rates and service fees tend to be higher given the shorter duration.

Comparison cards graphicLong-term
loans

Long-term loans

Long-term Personal Loans allow you to borrow money from a credit provider over a relatively longer period. These loans are often used for larger sums that you cannot readily provide at short notice, often with more affordable repayments.

Comparison cards graphicSecured
loans

Secured loans

A Secured Loan requires you to offer an asset as collateral, such as a vehicle or property. In exchange, you access lower interest rates since the credit provider carries less risk. Once repaid, the asset returns to your full possession.
